What will you be learning?

Rainforests can be one of the most rewarding subjects to paint. So full of life and variety of light, shapes, colours and textures.

But trying to paint the rainforest just from photos or memory can lose a lot of the magic that nature has provided us. You need to experience the feeling of calm of the forest, and revel in some of the amazing plant details that it has to offer.

In this Rainforest Art Experience, we’ll be drawing and painting directly from nature, whilst walking through the tranquil forest. I’ll show you exactly which details will give you the best results in your artwork. I’ll be going though how to design a great composition, how to observe and capture the story of the forest, how to capture the amazing textures and much, much more.

No matter what skill level you are at, you will walk away with a head full of new knowledge and inspiration.

Oh, and did I mention that it’s also a great way of unwinding from the hustle and bustle of life, whilst having fun and meeting new people?

Friday 27th October – Check in 3pm onwards

Light Dinner and gather around the Campfire: Meet us at the Communal Kitchen and Campfire for BBQ Dinner (next to the Safari Tents in the camp area)
Get to know you and share art stories around the campfire and experience the brilliance of the night sky far from city lights.

Saturday 28th October – Experience Highlights

FREE optional early morning YOGA session.(Beginners)
Breakfast: BYO, or purchase at O’Reilly’s Mountain Cafe or book at the “The Dining Room” restaurant.
9am – 5pm – Lessons and nature walks to draw from nature.
- Learn about capturing the rainforest in your artworks including the unique textures, light and amazing forms of the myriad of plant and animal species that call the rainforest home.
- Traverse short walks along ancient trails and a tree top walk guided by Murray, demonstrating sketching from nature.
- Witness the magic of nature up close, and draw inspiration from the beauty that undisturbed nature can provide.
- Experience and feed amazing birdlife from vibrant king parrots, rosellas, lorikeets, scrub turkeys, you’ll have the opportunity to observe and appreciate the rich diversity of rainforest inhabitants. A great opportunity to build a reference library of photos of these beautiful birds.

You can choose from 3 great options of accommodation to suit your budget and style. Nestled within the rainforest, comfortable lodgings await you. Fall asleep to the gentle symphony of nocturnal creatures and wake up to the melodies of dawn.

Safari Tent Experience ($140/night)

A permanent fixed tent structure with hard flooring, canvas walls, verandah, a queen bed and and a double/single set of bunk beds – sleeps 5 comfortably.
BYO bedding (sheets, pillows, towels, blankets) or hire service available. Additional $95.00 per tent for hire the beddings.

Mountain View Studios are newly appointed compact rooms designed for nature enthusiasts wanting a place to hang their boots and lay their heads after a day exploring Lamington National Park. Each room has an ensuite bathroom and a small balcony. There is a queen bed against one wall and the room is air-conditioned.

Art Materials

We recommend that you bring your own art supplies and a carry box/bag for your supplies. Art Materials are NOT included with this workshop. We will however be bringing along some various paints and mediums for you to try out if you wish. We also will have some art materials for sale throughout the workshop if you want to stock up.

Most of the lessons will be around sketching and observation of the key aspects of the rainforest. If time permits we will also look at doing colour studies, so bring along your favourite mediums.

I recommend that you bring a the following items for the workshop.

Sketch Book (any size, but A4 or A5 will be easiest to carry around for sketching)
Your choice of Pencils/pastels/charcoal for quick sketching
Eraser / Kneadable Eraser
Sharpener
Paper Stump
Your favourite paints or pastels for colour
small/medium Canvas boards (if painting)

Getting to O’Reilly’s

O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat is nestled within Lamington National Park, in the Gold Coast Hinterland, South East Qld. It is about a 2 hour drive south of Brisbane, or 1 hour, 45 minutes from Gold Coast Airport. If you are flying in from interstate, I would recommend flying to Gold Coast and hiring a car from the airport.

Can I bring friends and/or family members?

Yes, you can. The Safari tent can accommodate up to 5 people, and the Villas are 2 bedroom up to 4 people. If you would also like to include them into the meal packages and/or participation in the art classes, you can choose these options when you book. The meal package for non-participants of the art lessons will be $110, or if they would like to participate in the whole art event $400.
