This will be a 6 hour info packed Zoom session aimed at giving your skills a boost with drawing pastels. I’ll be demonstrating and explaining the techniques live so you can draw along with me and ask any questions along the way. It is just like being in the room with me as I explain all about how to draw with pastels.
The workshop is aimed at giving you all the skills you need to produce fantastic looking pastel drawings. I’ll give you instruction on how to get the best out of the materials, how to apply and mix colours, how to use light in your picture to get the best results, how to get fine details and most importantly how to make your drawings look amazing.
You’ll be interacting with a great community of likeminded people, all developing their own skills.
From this workshop, you’ll be tasked with producing a drawing of your own. Send me a photo of your drawing and you’ll get feedback from me at the Feedback workshop on June 3.
BONUS – Feedback Workshop, Saturday June 3
According to past students, this is the most valuable and enjoyable part of the whole bundle. Over Zoom you will join me for a 1 to 2 hour group call, where I provide feedback to students on their pastel drawings. During the call I use photoshop and a drawing tablet to sketch onto digital photos that students send in, so I can show you exactly what to focus on to improve your drawing.
You will learn heaps from this call, guaranteed. Not only will you learn from the feedback of your own drawing, but you will also learn heaps from other people’s experiences as well. This is by far the best way to learn.
WHAT MATERIALS YOU’LL NEED
You’ll need your own pastels and pastel paper to draw along with me in the class.
But I dont have any materials, what do I do?
To make it real easy for you I’ve put together a full materials pack that I can post to you prior to the workshop (I suggest getting in before May 19 to ensure you get them in time for the workshop). Everything you need for the workshop will be in that pack. To get the whole pack simply choose the “Workshop + Materials” option when you book your spot.
What if I already have pastels?
If you already have pastels and a selection of papers, no problem you’re already set. I’ll be using specific coloured papers for the demonstrations (listed below) which you can substitute with your own paper colours.

You explain and demonstrate very well throughout the sessions. I am up to Lesson 53 and had not realised how long I have been participating in your art lessons. Murray’s lessons are thoroughly enjoyable classes from drawing, sketching, colouring and painting. There is a lot to art that until you ‘get into it’, you do not realise or understand at first. Murray guides well with achievable steps to not feel overwhelmed but encouraged to begin. Murray steps the learner through the principles of perspective, line, seeing, mark-making, colour theory and techniques for most mediums. Always enjoyable.
I am of senior years and have dabbled with art since my primary school years, mainly sketching and oil painting. In retirement I decided to improve my works as I realised that although receiving favourable comments from friends, I knew that my works were falling well short of the standard I knew I wanted to achieve. This is the reason I joined ALO… someone very close to me died, at the same time I was diagnosed with CFS and had to retire from teaching. Merlin told King Arthur when you are deeply saddened learn something new. I started a painting class. (This is charcoal and acrylic). I quickly realized I would need to learn to draw “welcome to my world Art Lessons Online!” DRAWING is a form of mindfulness that recharges the brain and nervous systems. It recalibrates over thinking, anxiety and insecurity by bringing balance to the body and mind.
