If you’ve ever tried to paint birds you’ll know the frustration of colour mixing and texturing that can easily go wrong. You might have created paintings that just look flat and dull, or created textures that look like a straw broom rather than soft feathers. Perhaps whilst trying to paint vibrant colours you’ve ended up with a muddy colours that lack intensity. Maybe you’re new to all this and want to skip all the mistakes and get right into painting great birds.

So exactly how do we create pictures that look 3 dimensional, show the subtle, soft feathers and capture stunning colours without it looking like a psychedelic mess?

I invite you to join me for a 1 day painting workshop where I will tackle all of these problems and much more to show you how to create amazing bird paintings of your own.

The workshop will take you through every step of the process from initial sketch, scene design, getting your drawing onto canvas, and every moment of the painting process.

Some of the key lessons you will learn in this workshop include;

How to use lighting and contrast to create a picture that always pops off the page and looks 3 dimensional,
How to use brushwork to easily create the impression of soft feathers without spending hours and hours of fine detail with a microscopic brush,
How to balance the harmony and contrast of colours to create vibrant birds without it looking psychedelic,
How to make your painting look better than a photo.

You will spend the day with me (virtually) painting along and learning every detail of how to create your own amazing paintings.

Materials Required for Online Workshop

Materials not included in price of online workshop.

You will need to provide the following materials to paint along on the day. All materials can be purchased from Art Materials Online.

16 x 12″ (30cm x 40cm) canvas, or board or A3 Canvas pad
Gesso
Acrylic paint (I use Atelier Interactive paints) – White, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine blue, Crimson, Cadmium red light (Scarlet), Cadmium yellow medium, pthalo green, cobalt blue hue (optional)
Brushes – Flat size 12 bristle, Filbert size 8 bristle, Filbert size 4 synthetic, Filbert size 2 synthetic, size 2 Taklon round, size 000 Taklon round, Size 5/0 Taklon liner (optional)
palette (I recommend sta-wet palettes)
water container(s)
paper towels
A3 tracing paper
graphite and white transfer paper

What are we going to paint?

I’ve selected one of these beautiful crimson rosellas as our subject for the day. Prior to the workshop I’ll prepare a painting design in a natural rainforest setting and send you all reference material and details of how to prepare your drawing for painting at the workshop.
